Dear Tanu,
yeah it’s a well written thought.
However,I feel that u cant relate it to America alone...as xpressed

”America today is deeply worried about its youth. Various authorities believe that they are raising spoiled, indulgent generation. There have been many incidents of violence and killings by younger generation there”

Day in and day out such instances are happening in our conuntry also.
Universally, media has had a negative impact on the youth in particular.Dont u think so???

Cultural changes are very natural as humans become more mobile. It happens even among animals. Just look at this article on whale culture with parallism drawn to human culture:
But what is important we draw in what is good and leave out what is bad. And that’s a very thin line.
While I do agree partly with some of what you say about bad Western influences, I have only one question for you - Why have you harped on the role of women as only happy homemakers?
True modernity lies in the thought process and not in fashion trends or ”perceived modernity”. The education and economic independence of women need not be construed only as a Western idea or even if it is so, what’s wrong in taking the good from someone? Because more and more Indian women are seeking to work and are ambitious it does not make them a ”bad western model”. I am neither pro nor anti West. On the contrary I love our wonderful ancient Indian philosphy and culture. But I firmly believe we can marry the best of the West and East - which implies that we take the good of the West and the good of the East ( mind you, not everything of the East is good either). Unfortunately, we in India have been unable to shake off our colonial past and mistakenly believe that we have to follow the West in their worst values. At the same time, we are not able to emulate them in maintaining clean public places and being more law-abiding citizens. Nothing is black and white in life and I think the West is not the complete monster it is made out to be. It is we who do not seem to be able to shift the chaff from grain and take the best of the west while retaining our own glorious traditions, beliefs and thoughts.

Dear Tanuja,

A nice post that reinforces our faith in Indian values. There is nothing wrong in borrowing better trend patterns from West. However,it’s not happening and we are more interested in borrowing only those that add new dimensions in our well-being in a very superficial way.

It’s good to appreciate what’s happening in the Western world but I just wish to know how many of us are really and truly aware of what’s good in our traditions and culture. We take pride in quoting things from Western literature. How many of us have read Indian scriptures or for that matter present Indian literature?

Some years back, I saw a programme on TV.The anchor had posed a a very simple question related with Mahabharata. And you won’t believe none of them could answer that very simple question.

Anyway, we are living in a very strange times.Talk of ancient values ,in many eyes, is not only outdated but retrogressive as well.Or, for that matter, sounds like preaching!!!
